Intent

Law continues to be a popular subject in Post 16. It is designed for those wishing to pursue a career in Law and those who wish to become more empowered about their rights and responsibilities. Through studying Applied Law, it is hoped that students will:

  • Develop and sustain an enjoyment and knowledge of selected areas of law in England and Wales
  • Develop important techniques such as critical thought, analytical and problem-solving skills, which are highly desirable in the workplace and higher education.

Implementation

Law students study four areas of law.  Dispute solving focuses on civil law court structure, advice and representation, negligence and damages and is tested through external examination.  Criminal law includes concepts related to law making, criminal law personnel and non-fatal criminal offences and is tested through coursework.  Applying the law is an external examination focused on fatal criminal offences, police powers, offences against property and criminal defences.  Family law is a coursework unit where students study the law relating to marriage, divorce and settlements.  As an applied subject students will have to learn concepts and definitions and apply them to scenarios.  Students will have to undertake independent research, manage their time effectively and ensure completion of work to deadlines.  At the end of the course students should have a thorough understanding of legal concepts, be able to explain them confidently and precisely, apply them to scenarios and justify conclusions.

Impact

Employers across many industries hold The law qualification in high regard as the course helps you develop important skills, knowledge, and understanding. With further training, this course is a sound grounding from which to enter into a career in the legal profession, such as a solicitor, barrister or paralegal.
