Minimum of 5 9-4 grades in GCSE examinations, including English and Science.
Intent
The Cambridge Extended Technical Award is a high-quality alternative to A Levels and carries the same UCAS points as one A Level. This award is up-to-date and has been designed after significant consultation with employers and, whilst it is a vocational qualification, it is also designed with entry to Higher Education in mind. The qualification is made up of 6 units including building positive relationships in health and social care, equality, diversity and rights in health and social care, health, safety and security in health and social care, anatomy and physiology in health and social care, sexual health, reproduction and early years development, and Nutrition for health.
Across these units, students will understand how professional relationships paramount to the delivery of safe and effective care and support are and develop an understanding of these relationships, and how they are formed. This is essential if they are considering pursuing a career in the health and social care sector. They will understand the implications of diversity on practice and also the effects of discriminatory practice on individuals who require care or support. Students will also learn about the different types of hazards in health, social care and childcare settings as well as their potential impact on others. They will also find out about key legislation and organisational policies and procedures. In the anatomy and physiology unit students will learn about the structure and function of some of the tissues, organs and bodily systems that enable healthy body processes to take place in a coordinated way. They will learn about some of the conditions that are the result of body parts malfunctioning. Finally, students will develop an understanding of the importance of prenatal health and the factors that have an impact on the health and the development of the foetus, stages of pregnancy, and an overview of the care and development of a baby in the first year of life are also explored. This is particularly pertinent to students who have nursing, midwifery and teaching ambitions.
Implementation
The Cambridge Technical in Health and Social Care has been developed to meet the changing needs of the sector and prepare you for the challenges you will face in Higher Education or employment. Designed in collaboration with experts spanning the breadth of the sector, the Cambridge Technical focuses on the skills, knowledge and understanding that today is universities and employer’s demand. You will practically apply your skills and knowledge in preparation for further study or the workplace. Although the course is a mixture of coursework and examination elements, this is by no means an easier option. The course requires you to develop organisation, written and verbal communication and to remain dedicated from start to finish. The students that succeed on the course are those who communicate with their teachers, are organised to meet deadlines and those who are motivated to succeed within academia.
Impact
Students will develop professional and personal skills through interaction with people who either work in the sector or require care or support, as well as theoretical knowledge and understanding to underpin their skills. This will allow them to offer specific, person-centred care and support and build positive relationships with the people they are working with, so that their needs and requirements are met whilst they maintain control of their own care and support.
Students will consider the real impacts to people living with conditions or illnesses such as the social, financial and psychological impacts, not just the signs, symptoms and treatment of faceless conditions or illnesses.
Students will also learn about the legislation and guidance supporting health and social care, so that they can ensure the people they are working with are not only able to access all the care and support they are entitled to but are also able to protect themselves from any harm or abuse whilst at work.
