Intent
The English Department aims to offer an enriching and intellectually stimulating curriculum as part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme. Our IB English course challenges students to explore the power of language and literature, encouraging critical thinking, cultural awareness, and effective communication.
We offer the course in English Language and Literature which combines the study of both literary and non-literary texts, fostering an understanding of how language works in a range of contexts, from literature to media and beyond, from past to present, with global perspectives.
Implementation
The IB course in English Language and Literature is designed and delivered in order to develop students’ knowledge, understanding, skills of communication and evaluation. A combination of literary and non-literary texts are covered, as well as opportunity for students to research independently and identify their own literary choices and preferences; a focus on globalism and intertextuality is maintained throughout. Students are prepared and assessed in a number of ways and formats, ranging from developing an understanding of linguistics, advanced essay writing skills, research, presentation and responding to questions.
Impact
Our IB English Language and Literature course is designed for students who are passionate about literature, language, and ideas. Whether pursuing university studies in the arts, humanities, or beyond, students leave the programme with an enhanced knowledge and passion for the written and spoken word, as well as the tools they need to excel academically and personally in a globalised world.
It is our objective that students will gain both knowledge and skills throughout the delivery of the course, developing their powers of critical analysis, learning to examine language and literature with precision, interpreting themes, styles, and cultural influences while building their ability to articulate thoughtful arguments. Both in written and oral work, students will refine their ability to present ideas coherently, persuasively, and creatively in both academic and real-world contexts. Accordingly, they will advance their appreciation of global perspectives through the study of works from different cultures and contexts, developing a deeper understanding of worldwide issues, diverse points of view and the human condition. The IB English course content and assessment include oral presentations, written assignments, and exams that test students’ ability to analyse, interpret, and communicate effectively. These skills not only prepare students for higher education but also for careers requiring critical thinking and clear communication.
