Intent

At Knole Academy, we recognise the importance of PE and the role it has to play in promoting long term, healthy lifestyles and making a positive impact on physical, mental and social health. Physical Education helps students to develop the skills, knowledge, and competencies to live healthy and physically active lives at school and beyond. The Physical Education department at Knole Academy are fully committed to the all-round development of each student and the extensive broad, yet balanced, curriculum we offer.

The vision of the department is to create a learning environment where all students are able to achieve their full potential, through a range of purposeful yet enjoyable activities, where there are ample opportunities for our students to assume responsibility for their own learning. We engage and motivate all our learners through personalised and challenging learning objectives, in a context where, our students feel safe to evaluate their own and other’s performance in order to support progression. It is important to provide opportunities for students to take on different roles and responsibilities both inside and outside of the classroom.

We want our students to be inspired by sport and to instil a passion for maintaining their health and wellbeing into adult life. Similarly, we aim to encourage our students to enjoy physical activity, by ensuring all lessons are exciting and challenging with high quality teaching and learning. We provide pathways for all our students to continue their sport and physical activity within the local community by developing links to local sports clubs and activities.

Students are encouraged to work individually and as part of a team, which helps build trust, and develop problem-solving and communication skills. Competition is a huge part of the sporting environment and life in general and whilst we encourage competition and the competitive spirit, we also promote the ideas of fair play and sportsmanship in addition to the other Paralympic/Olympic and British values. Through our curriculum we hope students build the confidence and interest to get involved in exercise, sports and activities out of school and later in life. Our extensive extra-curricular programme is open to all of our students to attend on a competitive and social basis, which is run throughout the academic year. There are also sports leadership opportunities throughout their time at Knole Academy.

Implementation

At Knole Academy, the Physical Education curriculum is designed to build and expand on previous skills and subject knowledge, over a five to seven-year period. The curriculum is sequenced so that students have opportunities for repetition to embed knowledge and develop skills, increasing the chance of information recall and to integrate new knowledge into larger ideas.

Our curriculum is progressive and challenging, so that students develop a life-long love for a physical lifestyle, whilst developing a knowledge and skills base that helps them to develop opportunities for the future.

The curriculum is designed specifically to help students develop exceptional ‘theoretical knowledge’ and practise and refine ‘practical skills’.

Our ongoing work with the Knole Partnership, ensures that we provide exceptional outreach opportunities and pathways for pupils in Key Stage 2, which supports a successful transition for those students who join us in Year 7.

Impact

By learning a well-sequenced, progressive, knowledge-rich and skills-based physical education curriculum, our students will:

  • Develop a deep love of learning,
  • Understand the benefits of an active and physical lifestyle and how this contributes to positive physical and mental health and well-being,
  • Have access to a wide and varying range of sporting and active opportunities,
  • Develop a strong sense of teamwork and unity, resilience and determination, whilst promoting independence and self-study,
  • Recognise the many roles associated with physical education and sport, including coaching, officiating and performance,
  • Secure and deep technical knowledge of the theoretical principles that underpin physical education,
  • Acquire well-refined skills, a tactical understanding and to recognise the many career opportunities that the subject can offer.

The impact of our curriculum can also be measured in the following ways:

Sports/PE Studies in Each Stage

Our curriculum progression is outlined below –

  • In Year 7, our curriculum is designed so that all students develop a ‘love for Physical Education’.
  • In Year 8, knowledge and skills are developed further so that every student is encouraged to ‘broaden their sporting experiences’.
  • In Year 9, all students will have covered the National Curriculum objectives for Key Stage 3, so that they are given the opportunities to ‘develop skills and embed their knowledge’.

In Years 7, 8 and 9, the curriculum is planned and sequenced around the National Curriculum aims, ensuring that students access sequences of learning which are broad, balanced and highly challenging.

Our students are taught to:

  • Use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual games for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby and table tennis.
  • Develop their technique and improve their performance in other competitive sports such as athletics and gymnastics.
  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activities which present intellectual and physical challenges and be encouraged to work in a team, building on trust and developing skills to solve problems, either individually or as a group.
  • Analyse their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best
  • Take part in competitive sports and activities outside school through community links or sports club

Students complete a formal assessment once a term against the theoretical knowledge and physical skills.

Our curriculum progression is outlined below –

  • In Year 10, all students have a skills and knowledge base so that they are ‘thriving and striving’ across a range of sports.
  • In Year 11, all students recognise how Physical Education can play a significant impact in ‘creating healthy and active futures’.

In Years 10 and 11, the curriculum is planned and sequenced around the National Curriculum aims, ensuring that students access sequences of learning which are broad, balanced and highly challenging.

Our students are taught to:

  • Use and develop a variety of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in team and individual games for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby and table tennis
  • Develop their technique and improve their performance in other competitive sports such as athletics and gymnastics, or other physical activities such as trampolining or rock climbing.
  • Take part in further outdoor and adventurous activities in a range of environments which present intellectual and physical challenges and which encourage pupils to work in a team, building on trust and developing skills to solve problems, either individually or as a group
  • Evaluate their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement across a range of physical activities to achieve their personal best
  • Continue to take part regularly in competitive sports and activities outside school through community links or sports clubs.
